Santa Maria Civic Theatre to add Sensory and Autism Friendly performances for FREE Summer Fairy Tales this July
Everyone will truly be welcome as Peter Pan, his Lost Boys, and the Darling children battle pirates under the stage lights as the Santa Maria Civic Theatre proudly presents the annual FREE Summer Fairy Tales for kids of all ages, July 21-24 and July 28-31 in Santa Maria.
This year’s fairy tales event will feature “Peter Pan and Wendy,” a fast-moving, faithful adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s original play adapted for young audiences by Doug Rand and directed by Cagney Herrick. Shows, which are open to the public at no cost, run Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1:30 pm and 7 pm, and Sundays at 1:30 pm. With Thursday shows at 7pm being reserved for those who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensitivity issues and their families.
More children than ever before will have the opportunity to take part in the fairy tale performances with this year’s introduction of Sensory and Autism friendly shows. Sponsored by the Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center, these shows will be slightly altered for the comfort of those who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensitivity issues. Adjustments made to these performances include the reduction of jarring sounds and lights changes. Plus, the theatre’s lobby will serve as a quiet area for those that need to leave their seats during the production. While most fairy tale performances are first come, first served; the Thursday night shows will accept reservations which can be made by calling the theatre’s box office at (805) 922-4442.
“I love this story, because of the juxtaposition between Peter Pan and Wendy”, explains director Cagney Herrick, “Wendy is this young girl that is very nurturing and mature like a mother. While Peter is a very selfish boy who just wants to have fun.” As to why she wanted to offer Sensory and Autism friendly shows Herrick replied, “I love that we get to have the two Sensory and Autism friendly performances. I'm glad that these children and their families won't have to worry about anything. They can simply enjoy the show”!
Actor James Wyett adds, "I grew up, watching Peter Pan with my family. Now that I have children of my own, the circle continues! Only I have the added fun of being in the play with two of my children. It helps keep me young and reminds me to not take myself too seriously. I mean, I'm not really a codfish. I just pretend to be one sometimes!"
This year’s fairy tales program features Stephanie Roman and Lauren Tittes in the title roles of the classic tale “Peter Pan and Wendy”, respectively. Joining them in Neverland are Wendy’s brothers John (Bradley Wyett) and Michael (Kyle Kuhn), Peter’s companions Tinkerbell (Audrey Mason) and the Lost Boys (Tony Caraveo, Elijah Herrick, and Benjamin Wyett), the infamous Captain Hook (James Wyett), his band of evil pirates (Thomas Brown, Rosalynd Brown, and Grace Kitchen), and Angi Herrick rounds out the cast as Mrs. Darling.
The Summer Fairy Tales program is generously sponsored by the Breakfast Rotary and the Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center.
